Anniversary…

January 13, 2008

Today,
just one year ago,
I had just arrived in Melbourne, Australia.
No idea of anything, in the middle of the night, arriving at Southern Cross Station and wandering around through Melbourne’s CBD at 4 am in the morning not knowing that the “night” I booked in my hostel would end 5 hours later.

A – of course – chaotic start of one of the greatest periods in my live so far.
I met “hundreds” of germans backpacking along the East Coast in Australia and even here every second guy has been to Australia backpacking. (I think Australia (or at least the East Coast) might become the new german colony. like Mallorca)

But everybody acts different, thinks different, spend his time differnet… just lives different. So everybody get different experiences.
You might meet a guy who has been at the same place as you’ve been, doing the same stuff (probably drinking ^^ – what else are german backpackers doing in Australia), meeting almost the same people (either other germans, irish or english people) but still, his experience of this place will be completely diffent to yours.

In the end you have 100 people doing almost the exact same trip:
Starting in Sydney, driving down to Melbourne, St. Kilda, CBD, MCG, Grampians, Great Ocean Road, Adelaide, Wine tasting, Kangaroo Island, Ayers Rock, Olgas, Kings Canyon, Darwin, Katherine National Park, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Diving, sailing at Withsunday islands, 4WD Tour on Fraser Island, stopping by at all these beach towns like Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Townsville, Airlie Beach,… .

The locations are the same but the feelings and impressions are just different.

My trip was extremely fun (I think Jochen was quite a big reason for that πŸ˜€ ), and just great but sometimes I regret that I didnt see more from the real country and the people. Australians – not irish or english.
Ok the good thing is, that I lived in Melbourne and met there just the most coolest people ever πŸ˜€ but for example Paddy, a good friend of mine who spent 6 month travelling around Australia starting at the eastcost and finishing on the west coast. He explicit tried to avoid all tourist trips, stay in small and familiar hostels where you really meet people and get to know them (although you just know them for 2-3 days).

I wanna do this one day. Maybe not in Australia but somewhere else….

Although the world is small, its big enough.

P.s.: 1. Happy new year *cough* – forgot about that.
2. Dont take everything I wrote too serious πŸ˜‰

Last but (not) least

December 31, 2007

31. December….

Today started good for me…
I forgot the PIN of my new mobile and now its blocked, because I typed it wrong three times. Damn… I was 100% sure about it… until now ^^
Now I have to wait until I’m back in Karlsruhe to unblock it again.

Additionally to that I forgot to put the milk in the fridge again last night when Chri and I did our maths-learning-marathon (supported by a lot of coffee) the “whole” night (until 0 am, then we watched TV until 4 and then went to bed (“Hellboy” sux…!)). As reaction to that my milk decided to become some cheesy creamy semifluid stuff and my coffee stayed black this morning πŸ˜›

But except for this day this year was one of the coolest ever.
So much new experiences, people, friends, cities,…. It just couldnt have been better!

I learned a lot about other people, other cultures and about myself and I think I’ve never changed my personality and way of thinking as much as I did during the last 12 months.

Lets see what the next year brings…

Have a great new years eve and a good start into the next year.

Update time!

December 8, 2007

I was a bit busy the last few months….

Busy with getting used to Germany again. To Family, friends, language and culture (and don’t forget the weather πŸ˜‰ ).
Busy with getting organisied to move to Karlsruhe for uni. Search a room, move all my stuff etc…
And now as I (finally) started uni I’m even too busy to clean up my room. (ok…as If I would do it if I had the time… but thats not the point *g*).

To tell a bit about the last….almost three month. Damn, time flies….

Ariving back in Germany

As I said I flew off from Singapore on the 11th or 12th (of September) with a short stop in Dubai back to Frankfurt/ Germany.
The feelings you have if you’re coming back home after a 8 months period are weird. On my flight to Melbourne in January I enjoyed the flight so much. Watching movies, drinking beer and wine 8-), playing games or just listen to arabic music (sounds very funny for germans πŸ˜€ ) on the Emirates radio. That was basically the last “normal” step before arriving in Australia. Still Germans on the plane, a neutral culture (I think the circumstances in planes are the same all over the world πŸ™‚ ). So of course I was kind of nervious but still soooo excited.
It was different on the flight back. I was bored from the movies, annoyed that I had nobody to talk to (right now I dont even remember who I was sitting next to… or IF I was even sitting next to somebody) and incredible sad that I had to leave Australia/Singapore and “close” such an awesome time that, after my impression, changed me so much.

Back to topic…. the flight was pretty boring. (Maybe it’s the beer that I can’t remember anything from it….:P )

I had just a few hours stopover in Dubai.

Stopover in Dubai
The airport in Dubai is just classic. Its just like a long “street” about 1-2 km. On the left and right you find the gates and between that you have sleeping people. Everywhere sleeping people. Most of them look arabic or indian.

^^ Don’t cross the border!

Stopover in Dubai
Landing in Frankfurt….
The street with the curves is not the runway but the A5 (Autobahn 5). Its fun when you’re driving there at night. You see at least 15 planes above you with a few km gap between each other. Good atraction if you’re bored from driving πŸ˜‰

Coming home....
Entering the European Union… woooooooh ^^

The first german person I met back on german “ground” was a “nice” lady from customs (or something else) that wanted all the people form my plane to show her their passport for whatever reason. (As if they dont have one….). What was long befor we entered the EU and actually had to show our passports. She was standing right in front of the gateway and annoyed all the people coming out of the plane after an 8 hours flight….
It sounded like: “He you! Stop! Sho mi yur passport. Stop!! Yu have tu sho me yur passport!”, and I would have gone directly back on the plane… πŸ™‚

Anyway…
With my plane ticket I had a train ticket for one day in whole Germany included (ICE of course πŸ˜‰ ) so I didnt expect anyone to pick me up at the airport. But when I left the baggage claim area I saw my Dad. He left work early, took a train to Frankfurt 2-3 hours) and was waiting since half an hour or even more for me in front of the baggage claim (my plane decided to park on the complete other side of the airport….and the airport is big!).
I was complete speachless when I saw him. It’s not that I havent had contact with him over the last month or havent seen him (thanks to skype) but still…
We hugged each other and both almost cried – one of the most beatiful moments in my life so far…..

Me speachless and happy

We had 3 really cool hours in the train back to Nuremberg.

in the ICE

From there he drove back to work and I took a train to Erlangen where my mum and brother were waiting for me. They didnt know anything about the surprise either.

My Mum was crying when she saw me. And I was just happy. Happy that it’s so cool to come back and to see how much some poeple are caring about you.

Karlsruhe

I drove to Karlsruhe to look for a new plave to stay. At the start of the uni term its really hard to find a place because everybody is looking for something.

Coming home....

Of course not everything went well.
I forgot my wallet at home. 300 km away. And all I had left was a car with a quarter tank of fuel and this:

It’s only been a week,
The rush of being home in rapid fading.
Prevailing to recall
What I was missing, all that time… (RΓΆyskopp – Remind me)
